LAS VEGAS (AP) - Las Vegas police say a man who was shot by police when he charged them with a knife had prepared for a confrontation with officers and had rigged up a makeshift bullet proof vest with a Corian cutting board.

One officer fired a low-lethality shotgun at 31-year-olde Kyle Kuhn before Sgt. Sara Bradshaw fired one round from her handgun that penetrated the cutting board in the front of his jumpsuit.

Dispatchers say they could hear a man in the background saying he would kill his wife, Dawn Kuhn, during one of several calls they received about a domestic disturbance at a northwest residence Aug. 11.

Kyle Kuhn was hospitalized, but transferred the next day to the county jail. He was being held Sunday on $65,000 bond for assault with a deadly weapon, resisting arrest and domestic violence battery.
