GARDENA, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say an off-duty security guard shot and wounded a man who attempted to rob him outside a Gardena outlet mall.
Gardena Police Sgt. Todd Fox says the guard was approached Saturday evening while sitting in his car at a parking lot along Rosencrans Avenue.
The suspect, who was unarmed, pretended to hold a gun and demanded the guard hand over his property.
Fox says the security guard, fearing for his life, fired at the man in self-defense. The man was hit once in the abdomen.
He is hospitalized in stable condition.
The security guard was licensed to carry a handgun. He was not hurt.
