UPDATE: Court proceedings against the three remaining suspects in Monday's car chase have been continued until next week, as paperwork isn't finished yet. But all three were at the Washoe County Jail Thursday morning, in front of a closed circuit camera, ready to hear drug and conspiracy charges against them.
RENO, Nev. (AP) - A 22-year-old carjacker who stole a Nevada state trooper's cruiser then fatally shot himself in the chest with the patrolman's shotgun was on probation in Florida for carrying a concealed weapon.
Investigators confirmed Wednesday that Devin Peterson of Jacksonville, Fla., appears to have died from a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound after carjacking a second vehicle and leading police on a chase Monday on Interstate 80 east of Reno.
Florida Department of Corrections records show he was convicted of the felony gun charge in April 2011 and was sentenced to three years' probation.
Peterson fled after he and three other Jacksonville residents were pulled over and state troopers searched their SUV for marijuana. Their bail at the Washoe County Jail is set at $150,000 each on drug and conspiracy charges. The trio is expected to appear in court Thursday via closed circuit TV.
Two on-duty Nevada Highway Troopers are on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation following the high-speed chase and eventual death of a carjacking suspect Monday night.
According to Washoe County Sheriff's Office two troopers are on paid administrative leave for firing shots at a fleeing suspect on I-80 eastbound near Mustang when one of their vehicles was stolen during a traffic stop search.
It happened around 4.p.m. when Trooper Niveral pulled over a Gray 2013 Ford Explorer carrying three men and one woman. One of the men got out of the SUV and stole Trooper Niveral's patrol vehicle while he and another trooper were searching the stopped truck.
When additional troopers arrived on scene they attempted to stop the fleeing carjacker by shooting out the tires of the NHP vehicle, but the suspect only moved onto another car.
The suspect got out of the disabled NHP vehicle, now armed with the trooper's shotgun, and carjacked a 2007 Silver Pontiac Grand Prix.
The driver of the Grand Prix was not hurt.
Troopers say the suspect drove-off in the stolen Pontiac, tried to pass a semi truck, lost control of the vehicle, and crashed near Fernley. He got out, started shooting in the air, then shot himself twice.
Medical responders began to treat him, but he did not survive and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The dead suspect's name will not be released until the Washoe County Coroner's Office has positively identified him, and his family can be notified.
The driver of the stopped SUV and two of the passengers have been arrested on drug charges and conspiracy: Mollie Keiko Bass, 29-year-old Manuel Alejandro Rodriguez out of Jacksonville Florida, and 23-year-old Christian M. Magliano Alzpurua out of Jacksonville Florida.
If you have any information about this case, you're asked to call the Washoe County Sheriff Office, or Secret Witness at 322-4900.
