RENO, Nev.- On Valentine's Day the Great Basin Breweries in Reno and Sparks served a special menu with a romantic theme. At Great Basin's Taps and Tanks location on East McCarran it was a different story. This was the place to go for Stupid Cupid Night. Organizers say it's an effort to serve the entire community, not just those in happy, healthy relationships. Although plenty of couples did show up for the fun.
“We sure are romantic at the breweries and romance is very important to us but sometimes I think it's a little overdone,” Great Basin Brewmaster Tom Young said. “I think it's time to just get real and hang out.”
The event featured songs of bitterness and spite, dartboard games where patrons were invited to bring pictures of their exes and plenty of themed food like broken-hearted Icky bread and unromantic cookies. Beer selections included Lost Lust Lager, Alimony Ale and Hex-On-My-Ex Brew.
“Alimony ale is hitting it hard right now that's what I'm drinking,” Young said. “At the other restaurants we're doing Liplock Lager and Death by Chocolate Stout but we're doing the basics here.”
Allison Fender of Sparks came with her boyfriend and a few friends.
“We go to the Great Basin in Sparks all the time and this sounded like a really fun opportunity to check out Taps and Tanks,” Fender said. “It's very relaxed, very fun and everyone is having a good time.”
Cheryl Fillinger of Sparks was enjoying a Lost Lust Lager with her significant other.
“We just thought it sounded like fun, we really love the Great Basin we so like to come over whenever they're doing neat things.”
The staff is already thinking of ways to make the event bigger and better next year.
“Let's just have some fun,” Young said. “Beer is fun, it's not stuffy. Love should come from the heart and we brew from the heart so let's drink and be merry.”
