CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - Nevada state Sen. Mark Hutchison is running for lieutenant governor in 2014.
The freshman lawmaker from Las Vegas made his announcement Monday. He says he made his decision after talking with his family over the July Fourth weekend.
A conservative Republican, Hutchison voted against members of his party during the recent legislative session on some bills, while standing firm on other GOP principles.
Incumbent Republican Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki is termed out and cannot run for re-election.
Nevada's lieutenant governor is a part-time position. The lieutenant governor presides over the state Senate when the Legislature is in session and also is involved in economic development and tourism efforts.
The lieutenant governor takes over as the state's top executive if the governor is elected to a new position or leaves office.
