SPARKS, NV - The Chamber of Reno, Sparks and Northern Nevada is looking to clarify information about this July's Star-Spangled Sparks event.
The Reno Gazette-Journal is reporting the daytime events this year are being canceled because the city of Sparks pulled financial support. But Mayor Geno Martini says, "So what was in the Gazette Journal this morning was not true. They never approached us for any kind of funding... they didn't want to do that event this year because they were losing money. Had they come to us, wanted to do the event, we would have helped them out."
The event in the past has been put on by the Chamber, which has gotten money from Sparks. Chamber Executive Director Len Stevens confirms Sparks was not asked for money this year, because the Chamber had determined the event is no longer as viable as it used to be. He says volunteers and crowds have dwindled in recent years and fewer and fewer people have signed up for various competitions.
The Nugget, however, wants to make it clear the annual nighttime fireworks show is scheduled to continue this year.
