South Lake Tahoe Man Dead After Being Struck By Car

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. -- One man is dead after a being struck by a car Friday evening.

It happened around 6:45 p.m. at the Taco Bell restaurant on 2681 Lake Tahoe Blvd. When officers arrived on the scene, a 51-year-old male pedestrian was laying on the road. He was transported to the Barton Memorial Hospital where he died. His name will not be released until the next of kin has been notified.

Police identified the driver involved in the accident as Gregory Stearns, 49, from South Lake Tahoe. He was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and driving on a suspended licence from a prior DUI conviction.

Police suspect that the pedestrian was crossing at the crosswalk, wearing dark colors in an unlit part of the highway and failed to yield to oncoming traffic.

The pedestrian may also have been intoxicated and has a history with the South Lake Tahoe Police department for public intoxication.

The crash is still under investigation at this time.
