SPARKS -- The Best in the West Nugget Rib Cookoff began Wednesday as smoke continued to pour into the region from the Rim Fire. Smoke from wildfires has inundated the region for five days. Still, the event was crowded with lines within a short time of kicking off.
"We knew that there was a chance that it would be smoky but it's worth it we have a good time every year and smoke's not going to stop us," a woman said.
The festival is now in its 25th year. Lauren Garber of the Nugget said when the event began it attracted about 50-thousand people. Smoke or no smoke, she said this year 500-thousand are expected.
"We still have a few rooms available on Sunday but the rest of the days we're sold out so we don't anticipate the smoke is going to affect the event," Garber said.
The rib cookoff continues through Labor Day.
