RENO, Nev. (AP) - For the first time in three days, residents in the Reno area are not choking on smoke from major California wildfires.

Smoke from fires near Yosemite National Park and the Sierra Nevada west of Reno cleared Sunday afternoon after remaining thick earlier in the day.

The air quality index around Reno improved to the "moderate" range as it hit the 88 mark at 5 p.m. Sunday, down from the "unhealthy" range of 155 earlier in the afternoon and from 200 on Friday.

The smoke had been coming from the Rim Fire near Yosemite and the American Fire west of Reno.

The smoke forced the cancellation of various weekend events in the Reno-Lake Tahoe area, including an air show at Tahoe and a Nevada-San Francisco women's soccer game in Reno.
