Smaller Airports to Lose Air Towers; Reno Not Affected

RENO, Nev. (AP) - Reno-Tahoe International Airport's control tower was unaffected by the Federal Aviation Administration's initial budget cuts, but it may not be so lucky next time.

The tower did not make the FAA's final list announced Friday of 149 towers that it will close at small airports around the country starting early next month.

FAA officials say the initial cuts only affected federal contract towers, not FAA towers like the one at Reno.

They say the agency has not made any decisions about FAA towers yet, and it's still considering a proposal to eliminate the Reno tower's overnight shift.

The FAA is being forced to trim $637 million for the rest of the fiscal year that ends Sept. 30 because of across-the-board spending cuts known as sequestration, which took effect March 1.
