TRUCKEE, Calif. (AP) - A popular cross-country ski race from Tahoe City to Truckee has been canceled because of a lack of snow.
The Tahoe Nordic Search & Rescue Team on Wednesday decided to cancel the Great Ski Race for the second time in three years and only the third time in its 38-year history.
Team president Chris McConnell told Truckee's Sierra Sun (http://bit.ly/Mk71Zu ) that members wanted to uphold the reputation of the race as one of the best in the West and snow conditions just wouldn't allow it.
The Sierra snowpack is well below even half of normal for this time of year.
The event draws as many as 1,000 participants and is the main fundraiser for the search and rescue team.
