Shooting at Sparks Club Leaves 1 Wounded, Police Searching for Shooter

SPARKS, Nev. -- An early morning parking lot brawl and shooting landed one person in the hospital and police on the hunt for the shooter. It happened after 2am in the parking lot of the Vaqueros night club on Oddie Blvd. near Sullivan.

When officers arrived, everyone involved in the shooting was already gone, but a witness reported a man in his mid-20s was the shooter. The witness described him as having a "chubby" build; he was wearing a white shirt and khaki pants.

Witnesses said that at least one person was hit in the shooting, so police notified all local hospitals. The victim, 19-year-old Peter Cortez, turned up at Renown Medical Center with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his upper torso.

Cortez told investigators that he wasn't involved in any kind of confrontation before the shooting and that he did not know who the shooter was.

Police say they are looking for a vehicle of interest described as a Hummer with a truck bed and spare tire mounted on the rear. They do no know the Hummer's color.

About two hours prior to the shooting incident, Secret Witness received a tip via text that there were two men in a green Jeep in the parking lot. They were reportedly arguing and one of them had a gun. It is unknown if the tip is related to the fight and shooting. According to texted tip about the earlier incident, the man with a gun was described as 5 feet, 4 inches tall wearing a blue and black hat and long-sleeved, checkered shirt. Police did respond to that incident but found no one.
