Senior Home Safety Checklist

By  |

RENO, NV - In recognition of National Safety Month, the Home Instead Senior Care Office serving Reno and Carson City is offering a free home safety checklist for seniors and their families. Senior home safety experts recommend that adult children of seniors take at least one day each year to perform a thorough safety check of their parents' homes.

Here are a few adjustments you can make. One example would be, getting rid of throw rugs or using double-sided tape to secure them to the floor. Adding night-lights or rope lighting to dark rooms or hallways can be helpful if a senior needs to get up in the middle of the night. Installing grab bars near shower and tub units can help prevent falls and other accidents, and handrails are also a must along staircases. A lock-in switch on thermostats may be a good idea to control the temperature and help prevent furnace fires. Also, make sure all furniture is sturdy to give seniors proper support.
