CARSON CITY, Nev. – Nevada Senate Republican leaders on Wednesday lauded Governor Brian Sandoval’s State of the State address for focusing on the issues most important to Nevadans, holding the line on higher taxes and providing a clear vision for the future of the Silver State.
“The governor has given the Legislature a plan for prosperity in Nevada,” said Sen. Michael Roberson, R-Henderson. “Particularly important is the governor’s commitment to education. A new $135 million investment in education for our children is a great step toward closing the achievement gaps in our state and ensuring success for every Nevadan.”
Republican leaders were also appreciative of the governor’s ongoing commitment to diversifying the state’s economy and ensuring economic prosperity for individuals and businesses.
“As the governor said, Nevada’s economy is on the rebound,” said Sen. Ben Kieckhefer, R-Reno. “We must ensure that our tax and regulatory policies protect that recovery and encourage it to pick up steam. The governor’s decision to invest in the Knowledge Fund and the Jobs for America’s Graduates program will help strengthen our recovery even further.”
Gov. Sandoval’s diligent commitment to Nevada’s economic security in light of the Affordable Care Act was also seen as a highlight of his speech.
“Protecting Nevada’s ability to opt out of the Medicaid expansion if the federal government ever tries to shift additional costs to the states is an essential part of protecting Nevada’s long-term fiscal stability,” said Sen. Joe Hardy, R-Boulder City. “Having the governor condition Nevada’s expansion on the state’s ability to opt out at a future date provides great comfort that Nevada will retain control over its finances in years to come.”
