According to the California Highway Patrol, the driver of a semi truck involved in a rollover accident has died.

The truck was traveling on I80 westbound when it left the roadway just after the Nevada border around 10:35 Sunday night. A Caltrans worker was driving eastbound on I80 when he says he saw the semi disappear. He flipped around at the Verdi exit to assist the driver.

The Caltrans worker and first responders all report the driver was conscious when they arrived on scene.

California Highway Patrol, Sierra Fire Protection District, and Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District responded to the scene and began using Jaws of Life to extricate the driver.

Before the driver could be fully removed, he was pronounced dead.

It's not yet known what, if anything, the driver was hauling.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation. Investigators tell KOLO 8 News Now they believe the trailer flipped onto its side as the semi left the roadway; however, the cab may have stayed upright until it hit some boulders at the end of the ditch.
