Two Road Workers Dead, Two Hurt in NV Cone Zone Crash

BATTLE MOUNTAIN, Nev. (AP) - Authorities say two road workers are dead after an SUV hit them in a construction zone between Battle Mountain and Elko.

Nevada Highway Patrol officials say the crash happened about 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Authorities say 69-year-old driver Candace Gittins was approaching stopped traffic along Interstate 80 when she swerved into orange construction barrels to avoid other cars.

She struck four workers employed by the company A-Core. Fifty-three-year-old Vicki Stenovich died at the scene, while 47-year-old Arthur Lucero died of his after being taken to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno.

Fifty-year-old Mario Ramos was taken to Renown and is in stable condition, and 50-year-old Karen Martin was taken to a Battle Mountain hospital with minor injuries.

Trooper Jim Stewart says it's unclear whether Gittins will face charges in the case.
