Reno City Council formally shut down Moana Stadium during Wednesday

Moana Stadium

RENO, NV - It used to be a vibrant ball park that our community was proud of. For years, Moana Stadium was home to Reno's Silver Sox - and it ignited golden dreams. Now - the shuttered stadium is an eyesore. But there's a new push to clean it up and revamp it into something fresh.

"If you look at the old home of the Reno Silver Sox here, you see it's in total disrepair. It's dilapidated and truly an eyesore and a blight in our community," says Jessica Sferrazza, a Reno city council member.

But it looks like the community is coming together to fix the Moana Stadium. Just over two weeks ago, Sferrazza came up with a plan to revamp the old stadium which is covered in weeds and has been a target for vandals.

"We can really take this park and turn it into something we can all be proud of in this community," says Sferrazza.

Her plan: to demolish the stadium and make it into two soccer fields. The idea has caught on and won the support of Great Basin Youth Soccer League, which pledged to donate $50,000 to the cause.

"We need to create something that we can have pride in when people drive down Moana Lane," says Richard Jay, past president of Great Basin Youth Soccer League. "They can see these kids playing soccer out here, and they can say 'Wow, that looks great!'"

At Wednesday's Reno City Council meeting, elected officials and Reno citizens stepped up to pledge their support.

Sferrazza estimates it could cost $400,000 to tear down the stadium. In addition to Great Basin Youth Soccer League, the Peppermill and the Atlantis have pledged donations. They're hoping more people and organizations will contribute to get the project off the ground. The goal is to demolish the stadium on June 2 and 3 and hopefully, get volunteers to work together to start getting the field ready in September.

The project is being called Miracle on Turf.
