RENO, NV - Anita Wright wanted to show others a disability shouldn't stop them from living life. She spread her message as a type of goodwill ambassador for Shriner's in the 1970s.

"They can see what I can do and what people can do when given the right options," Wright said.

When Wright was born, she wasn't expected to live. But with the help of Shriner's Hospital, she did just that. Her leg was amputated and she's had eight surgeries.

Through her spokesperson role, she meet with politicians including Harry Reid and former Governor Michael Callaghan.

But now she says things are very different. She's lost her parents, husband and home. She was also laid off, and has run out of benefits.

"My hips are very sore all the time and it's very difficult to get around," she said.

Wright uses a cain or a scooter.

Her disability claim was denied, with the government saying it believes Wright's condition does not prevent her from working.

"I've been disabled all my life and it's about time the government knows there's some people out here who really deserve to get disability that have worked for it."

Wright said she is living on welfare she is worried will stop coming, and the charity of her friends.

there are "exertional" and non-exertional impairments - get a lawyer or even better a strong advocate / one who won't cave in - or play footsy with the Social Security Administration while lying to you about how great they are - file all appeals on time - keep going!!! make sure you have treatment records for all conditions - best of luck.

You have to keep appealing and appealing! Then you needd to get a lawyer, it is worth the 25% they charge! I have had 3 back surgeries (unsuccesful) and bipolar and it has Taken me 3 years to finally get approved, Just keep trying, if you REALLY are disabled the Judge will approve you!

It does not matter whether she CAN work or not- The disability should reflect that there are three major areas of her life that are affected, and which she can barely accomplish! Disability most always denies' claime- just appeal, amd wait. However, get your doctor to fill out a form, and use any and every documentation anmd the function paper that SSI gives to fill out; to explain the activities of daily living. I can walk, move, and drive, and I am disabled because of memory, and word-finding problems that are made worse by low blood sugwer and fibro-fog of Fibromyalgia, I have a bad back and cannot stand more than 5 minutes at times, have to have a knee replacement and my heel spur makes' me in a Lot of pain.
