Reno on the Ropes After Loss in Sacramento

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento River Cats used a late rally to beat the Reno Aces, 5-4, at Raley Field Saturday night. The Aces must win the remaining two games in the regular season to win the Pacific Northern Division title and reach the Pacific Coast League Playoffs.

For the third consecutive game, the Aces stormed out to an early lead. With two outs, Andy Marte’s single up the middle gave Reno a base runner. Mike Jacobs followed with a towering pop up in shallow left-center that Jed Lowrie dropped, allowing Marte to third.

A.J. Pollock made the error hurt when he hit a line drive triple over the head of right-fielder Nick Buss, scoring Marte and Jacobs to give Reno a 2-0 lead. With Danny Dorn batting, a passed ball by Bryan Anderson allowed Pollock to score to extend the lead to 3-0.

Sacramento got one run back on an RBI groundout by Shane Peterson in the fourth inning. In the fifth, a bases-clearing double down the left-field line by Daric Barton gave the River Cats a 4-3 lead.

It stayed 4-3 until the seventh when Danny Dorn tied the game with one swing. He drilled a 1-1 pitch from Zach Neal out to deep right-field for his 12th home run of the year.

Reno didn’t get another base runner the rest of the way. Right-hander Fernando Rodriguez struck out the side in the eighth inning.

Zeke Spruill started the bottom of the eighth by allowing a base hit to Daric Barton. A groundout moved Barton to second, and he moved to third after Shane Peterson walked and Jose Martinez was hit by a pitch.

Aces Manager Phil Nevin summoned Joe Paterson from the bullpen with the bases loaded and one out. On a 3-1 pitch, Alden Carrithers hit a slow chopper to Chris Owings who had only a play at first base. The groundout scored Barton with the eventual winning run.

Jeremy McBryde worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to close out the win for the River Cats. The two teams are tied atop the Pacific Northern Division standings but Sacramento holds the first tiebreaker.

With the season on the line Sunday night, Reno will turn to right-hander Mike Bolsinger (8-3, 3.94) who goes against right-hander Matt Buschmann (9-6, 4.24) for Sacramento. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 p.m.
