RENO, Nev. (AP) - A homeless man convicted of murdering a 58-year-old Reno woman who took him into her home has been sentenced to life in prison.

The Washoe County Deputy District Attorney Chris Hicks says 35-year-old Joe Scott also was sentenced Wednesday to an additional 20 years for use of a deadly weapon in the stabbing death of Tanjernia Whitfield in September.

He'll be eligible for parole in 18 years.

Whitfield died about three weeks after police found her at her doorstep with multiple stab wounds.

Police say Scott had been homeless and temporarily was staying with Whitfield. He claimed the killing was an accident. He told investigators he'd been using methamphetamine for three weeks. He said he stabbed her because he was having hallucinations and thought she was a demon.
