RENO, Nev. -- Fans of the late Ed Carlson, better known as "The Waver," are planning a final wave in his honor.
Organizer Willie Puchert says the event will take place at noon on New Year's Day at Reno City Plaza, which is now the ice skating rink on the river (10 N. Virginia St.). It will include a short tribute followed by a mile-long walk on S. Virginia St. while waving to oncoming traffic, much the way Carlson did for years.
Carlson was known as "The Waver" because he often walked along Virginia St./395 between downtown Reno and Carson City while waving to drivers and passengers traveling that stretch of road. According to Puchert, Carlson did this from 1974 to the early 2000s.
Carlson passed away on Friday. He was 75 years old.
