Recovering Addict Saves Texan from Reno Drowning

RENO, Nev. (AP) - A Texas tourist who nearly drowned in Reno's Truckee River is alive thanks to a recovering methamphetamine addict who happened to be passing by on the way back from Alcoholics Anonymous.

John Markey was walking in downtown Reno last week when he heard screams from across the river at the Whitewater Park. Soon he and a friend saw 23-year-old Meagan Melancon floating motionless, face down in the current.

Markey scrambled over a wall and dropped 15 feet to the rocks below before pulling the woman from the water.

Sergio Martinez, the friend who first spotted her, told the Reno Gazette Journal it was lucky because a month earlier, Markey wouldn't have been there. The 33-year-old Markey recently was released from a rehab center after his February arrest for burglary.
