RENO, NV - Reno police have identified a shoplifting and carjacking suspect as 19-year-old Derek Kirk.

NHP and Carson sheriff's deputies arrested him after a car chase on southbound 395. They put down spike strips to stop him and caught up with him after he crashed the pickup into a ditch near Washoe Valley.

It all began when Reno police were first called by Tribal police to the Walmart at Three Nations Plaza off East 2nd Street shortly before ten Wednesday night. Tribal officers said the suspect stole from the Walmart store, and when an employee approached the man, he pulled out a 12-inch knife.

At one point, several Reno officers were searching the area around Frenchman's Park for the suspect, who they say jumped in the river at one point, got out and then jumped back in.

Kirk then crossed the river and stole a maroon pickup truck from East Second Street and Sunshine.

He is charged with assault on a police officer with a deadly weapon, felony vehicular eluding and grand larceny of a motor vehicle.
