SPARKS - Renovations at the Nugget mean Last Chance Joe needs a new home. The 36-foot statue has been the face of Nugget Avenue since the 1950s. However, the new owners of the casino in downtown Sparks are redoing the façade of the building, and that means the iconic miner will have to move.
The Nugget is looking for someone in the community to help find a more permanent and historic location for him.
The Sparks City Council is also looking at options to save Joe. However, moving the statue is expected to cost thousands of dollars. The council will take up the issue at its next meeting.
The Nugget is undergoing a $50 million makeover. Most of the renovations are expected to be done by this summer.
