KIEV, Ukraine (AP) - It's been a violent day in Ukraine's capital of Kiev, where protesters tossed firebombs at police -- and government snipers fired back. A protest doctor says at least 70 people were killed and hundreds were wounded. And he says the death toll could rise.

In all, according to protesters and Ukrainian authorities, more than 100 people have died this week in clashes in Kiev, after three months of mostly peaceful protests. At the center of the revolt is the question of whether Ukraine will have strong ties with Russia or the West.

There were shocking scenes today on Ukrainian TV of protesters being gunned down and lying on the pavement as fellow demonstrators rush to their aid. Teams of protesters are seen carrying bodies away on sheets of plastic or on planks of wood.

One of the wounded, a volunteer medic, sent out a brief Twitter message after she was shot in the neck. It read, "I'm dying." But she's listed in serious condition after being operated on.

Protesters are also seen leading policemen with their hands held high around the sprawling protest camp in central Kiev. Ukrainian officials say 67 police were captured. An opposition lawmaker says they're being held in Kiev's city hall, which is occupied by protesters.
