RENO, NV - Powerball is coming to California. The folks at Gold Ranch RV Casino and Resort in Verdi are excited. The lottery building there is already a popular place for Northern Nevadans to come buy Mega Millions and Super Lotto Plus tickets, especially when there's a big jackpot.
Now that sales for Powerball tickets are set to start on April 8, Gold Ranch Casino workers are expecting big crowds.
"We are really excited to be able to offer Powerball to lottery enthusiasts in our area," says Tom MacIntosh, the general manager of Gold Ranch Casino.
The $2 Powerball game is similar to the Mega Millions game. Players choose five numbers from 1 to 59 and one Powerball number from 1 to 35. Powerball drawings will be held every Wednesday and Saturday at 7:59pm PST.
A big difference between California's existing draw games is that the Powerball jackpot begins at $40 million and increases by at least $10 million every roll.
People stopping by Gold Ranch Casino this week are already excited about the prospect of playing Powerball. There are signs advertising the game coming to California. And plenty of Nevadans are already counting on buying at least one ticket that first day they are for sale.
"It's wonderful," says Audrey Townsend, when she heard the news. She lives in Fallon and heads to Gold Ranch Casino once a month to buy Mega Millions and Super Lotto Plus tickets. Next month, she plans to add a Powerball ticket to her shopping list.
"It's a win-win," says Peter Hartigan, a Reno resident who regularly buys California Lottery tickets at Gold Ranch Casino. He thinks all that extra foot traffic Powerball will bring to the lottery building will benefit the casino. "It will probably bring more people in to have food there as well as play the slot machines."
Powerball tickets go on sale on April 8. The drawing will take place on April 10.
