Pack Women Lose Opening Game at Nugget Classic

RENO, Nev. – The University of Nevada women’s basketball team opened the 2013 John Ascuaga’s Nugget Classic with an 88-77 loss to Idaho Friday afternoon at the Lawlor Events Center.

With the loss, Nevada drops to 3-3 on the season, while Idaho improves to 4-2 on the year.

The game was close in the opening minutes as the two teams were tied 13-13. Danika Sharp had the hot hand for Nevada early on, scoring the first six points for the Wolf Pack. The Vandals went on an 8-0 run to take a 21-13 lead with 12:40 on the clock. A jumper by Alyssa Charlston gave the Vandals a double-digit lead of 32-21 with 6:38 to play in the first half. Terilyn Moe fed Mimi Mungedi on the block with an assist to cut the deficit to 32-28 with four minutes to go before halftime. Nevada forward Julia Shelbourn tied the game at 32-32 with a nice low post move. Freshman Ashlee Jones connected on a three to give the Pack a 35-33 lead with 1:51 on the clock. Idaho led 39-37 at halftime.

Mungedi’s basket in the paint out of the break evened the score at 39-39. A runner by Moe put Nevada ahead 41-39. Mungedi continued to dominate down low, giving the Pack a 45-41 lead with a lay-up at the 17:24 mark. Charlston’s made basket tied the game for the Vandals at 57-57 near the midway point of the second half. Karlee Wilson knocked down a three on Idaho’s next possession to pull ahead 60-57. A made jump shot by Shelbourn cut the Nevada deficit to 70-56 with 6:37 left in the second period. Vandals guard Stacey Barr hit a shot from beyond the three-point line at the 4:18 mark to stretch the Idaho lead to 79-67. A pair of free throws by Vandals forward Ali Forde sealed the win, as Idaho claimed the 88-77 victory.

Mimi Mungedi led the Pack with a career high 19 points. Terilyn Moe finished the game with 12 points, while Amber Smith had 11 points. Danika Sharp moved into a tie at fourth place on Nevada’s all-time made three-pointer list with Tahnee Robinson (2009-11) at 140.

Nevada will face the loser of tonight’s No. 20 Cal-Wake Forest game in the Nugget Classic Consolation game tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. Fans who attend the Nevada-BYU football game Saturday afternoon can bring their game ticket to receive free entrance to the women’s basketball game.
