A vintage 1870's home in Virginia City caught on fire around noon Saturday.

Crews from Carson City and Lyon County as well as the Sierra Fire Department and Reno Fire Department assisted Storey County crews, working for several hours to knock down the remaining flames.

The old home, which according to local historians is "The House of Seven Gables", was nearly completely destroyed by the fire.

The occupants of the home were unharmed, and firefighters also rescued three small dogs from the burning structure. One of those dogs had to be taken to the vet.

A Storey County Firefighter was also taken to the hospital for minor injuries.

The house is a rental. According to the Storey County Sheriff's Department, the owner is currently teaching in China.

I have lived in VC for 58 years. The house that burned was always known as the house of "Three Gables" as far back as I ever remember. Wher did seven come from?
