One Seriously Hurt in Early-Morning Chain Reaction Crash East of Fernley

RENO, Nev. -- The Nevada Highway Patrol’s Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) spent the day trying to find out what caused a serious-injury accident about 19 miles east of Fernley early Saturday morning.

Troopers were called to the crash on I-80 near mile marker 67 at about 2:40am. They found two commercial trucks involved in a chain-reaction crash. Preliminary results of the investigation show a blue, 2005 Freightliner was going east on I-80 when it drifted into the median and flipped onto its side, blocking almost all of the eastbound lanes. The driver, 34-year old Lawrence Burnett, Jr. of Sacramento, was not hurt.

Directly after that, a red, 2011 Volvo truck hit the overturned trailer. The driver, 64-year-old Allen Weaver from Payette, Idaho, was seriously injured and had to be extricated. A Care Flight crew took him to Renown Medical Center in Reno.

If you saw the accident or have more information, please call NHP Trooper Chris Kelly at (775) 689-4661 and refer to case number "NHP-121200047."
