RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - EXCLUSIVE UPDATE: KOLO 8 News Now Rebecca Kitchen spoke with the family of the victim, who identified the man as Bob Sperry.
Officials with the Reno Police Department say the victim was shot by the suspect after he attempted to intervene during the robbery.
UPDATE: Officials with the Reno Police Department say an off-duty officer was present at the time of the robbery.
Officials say the officer saw the robbery and the shooting of the male patron. After the suspect fled the bank, the officer ran and pursued the suspect.
The off-duty officer tackled the suspect and took the gun from the suspect, according to an official with the Reno Police Department.
Officials say the off-duty officer was able to physically hold the suspect to the ground until responding officers arrived.
UPDATE: The Reno Police Department revealed the identity of the suspect involved this case as being 66-year-old Van McDuffie.
McDuffie is being charged with bank robbery with the use of a dangerous weapon causing death, according to an official with the Reno Police Department.
RENO, NV - One person is dead after a robbery that happened at the Bank of America near Meadowood Mall, according to REMSA officials.
William Rulla with the Reno Police Department tells KOLO 8 News Now that officers responded to a call of shots fired at the Bank of America near Meadowood Mall at 10 a.m. this morning. When officers arrived, they noticed a man was down inside of the bank.
Rulla says the suspect fled the area with an undisclosed amount of money and ran toward the bus stop near Meadowood Mall. He says officers took the suspect into custody without incident.
The individual killed was not a worker at the Bank of America, according to Rulla. Rulla tells KOLO 8 News Now that a patron of the bank was killed. Their identity is not being revealed at this time.
Rulla says the bank robber possibly caught a taxi to the bank; While inside, an altercation happened and the patron was shot and killed.
Police are investigating exactly how the event happened.
An official from the FBI sent KOLO 8 News Now an e-mail saying, the FBI is aware of and investigating the situation along with the Reno Police Department and U.S. Attorney's Office. More information will be provided if and when the situation dictates.
The robbery happened on Wednesday, October 16, 2013.
