Northstar and Heavenly to Open on Wednesday

At Northstar, crews have fewer than 24 hours to get the place ready for skiers and riders. Now that they've decided to open two days ahead of schedule.

"We were originally scheduled to open on Friday, the 16th. But with our snowmaking efforts and what mother nature delivered over the weekend were so successful that we said, why wait?" says Jessica VanPernis, communications manager for Northstar.

Northstar now plans on opening up four chairlifts and one magic carpet on Wednesday. That will give skiers and riders access to six trails.

"These trails that we have open, they'll be open wall to wall with snow coverage. So you'll be able to bring your brand new skis out here and ski on this terrain," says VanPernis.

And for those who want to kick back, the entire Village at Northstar will be open, including a few new shops and restaurants. The ice skating rink will open at 12 noon.

Heavenly is also opening up on Wednesday at 8:30 am, two days before it was originally scheduled to. And Kirkwood has pushed up its opening date to Friday. That's the same day Squaw Valley plans to open now. That's six days earlier than planned.

"You know, people are really excited. They're up here, they're seeing the snow. People can't wait to get out and we just want to give them the opportunity to get on the mountain," says Amelia Richmond, PR manager and spokesperson for Squaw Valley.

Mount Rose Ski Tahoe plans to open with top-to-bottom skiing and riding on the day before Thanksgiving.
