MINDEN, NV - News of the shootings at a Connecticut elementary school last month shocked people everywhere. Some here in northern Nevada felt a special connection to one of its victims and did something about it.

Six year old Olivia Engel was one of the 20 first graders who died that day. Her father works for the sailmaker, North Sails, a few miles from the school.

When employees at North Sails' Minden plant learned of her connection, it was like they'd lost a member of the family.

They decided to help the only way they could by raising money for the Engel family and many in Carson Valley joined them.

Monday, a local North Sails spokesman said a check for $5,974.09, every cent raised, had been sent to the Engels.
