No More Gas Tax?
With more cars getting better and better gas mileage than ever before, current state gas tax isn’t generating enough money to fix our highways and build new ones.

RENO, NV - With more cars getting better and better gas mileage than ever before, current state gas tax isn’t generating enough money to fix our highways and build new ones. So the Nevada Department of Transportation is looking a whole new way to keep up with expensive highway repairs.
As much as we complain about Nevada roads, we still need them to get around town.
Their creation and upkeep are made possible with a gas tax you pay at the pump.
But with newer gas efficient cars the state believes that by 2016 fuel efficiency will reach 37 miles a gallon.
That translates into less money for highway upkeep.
The solution: A Vehicle Miles Traveled Fee or V-M-T.
N-DOT and University of Nevada Las Vegas have been working together to figure out to calibrate, and then charge the driver a fee based on the miles driven.
Through a series of public hearings, most people said they were concerned about the privacy of the V-M-T.
Researchers say they are currently reviewing a system that could take a simple odometer reading at the pump....no driver, vehicle, location, or time would be tracked with such a system--but the information would be used to calculate how much you owe the state based on the miles driven.
Drivers we talked to were not wild about the idea.
“I don't like the idea, I thin that equity, we all need to pay for the roads, one person drives more miles than the other. Realistically if our government would spend our taxes more wisely, we wouldn't be looking at finding other ways to fix our roads,“ says Sparks Resident Nancy Danner.
Rich Ballot a Sparks resident says we shouldn’t be addressing this problem for another 10 years.
And then?
“Yea, we'll get taxed again,” says Ballot .

just like nevada to create a new tax that penalizes efficent vehicles and rewards old ineffcient ones, which is the bottom line when you compare the new "miles tax" idea to the old tax per gallon idea. id rather just see them raise the per gallon 10c or 20c than this new mess.
How do we express our displeasure in a safe but effective way? Who would I call or write a letter to? I encourage everyone here to do so, this I just redicilous! They are gonna try and pick our pockets again just because we were smart enough to buy a car that would save us money, how about not having $3.70 per gallon gas prices and we would want to go some where, or how about higher minimum wage so those unfortunate enough can afford the gas prices they are making is eat!
so many of ours roads have been changed to accommodate bicycles, and this has cost taxpayers money, there should be some form of tax paid by them since we 'share the road' they should share in funding
