CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - A lot of work needs to be done before the historic Nevada State Prison is Carson City can be opened for public tours.
State corrections officials say they were taken by surprise when one member of a prison preservation group said backers hoped to start offering tours of the shuttered prison on Nevada Day in October.
The Nevada Appeal reports state officials have been working with the historical preservation society but there are no firm plans as yet.
A bill passed by the 2013 Legislature allows the Nevada State Prison Historic Preservation Society to begin working toward turning NSP into a museum and tourist attraction.
State officials say those efforts are just beginning and many issues need to be addressed before NSP is open to the public.
