New Sunscreen Labels

It doesn't take much sun and heat for those in Northern Nevada to come out and soak up some rays.

At Rock Park on Monday, people had bathing suits on, and were laying out in the sun.

Its only going to get more crowded the warmer it gets.

And for some, putting on sunscreen will be part of the routine.

“Zinc oxide and one is titanium dioxide and both are very good and they sit on the top of the skin and they reflect light away from the skin. So the skin doesn't have light penetration. The other ones are chemical sun screens they actually penetrate the skin and they absorb energy from the light,” says Dr. Lamerson describing how the two kinds of sunscreens work.

New labeling of sunscreens is already underway.

You may have already noticed it, if not you soon will.

The labels will contain more information, and manufacturers have had to prove their claims before they go on the label.

If the label says broad spectrum, it means there's protection from both UVB and UVA rays.

Water resistant is the most labels can report as all sunscreens will wear off.

Which is why you'll see a time frame when that might happen.

Look for the SPF number, dermatologist recommend anything more than 30.

Human nature has a lot to so with that recommendation

“We used to recommend an SPF of 15 but people weren't applying it in appropriate amounts. They were only applying a very thin layer, And when you apply a thin layer you are only getting an SPF of probably 6 or 8,” says Dr. Lamerson.

Look for expiration dates on sunscreens as well, after time the ingredients in the product that are designed to protect your skin will break down leaving you vulnerable to sun burn and skin damage.

The new guidelines apply to all personal care products.

That includes not only sunscreens, but makeup, moisturizer, and lip balm.
