New Kids' Fitness Facility Opens in Reno

RENO, NV - A new fitness facility designed for 3- to 6-year-olds opened its doors on Longley Lane on Friday. USA FitKids is designed to make exercise available and fun to kids in the Reno-Sparks area.

"What we tried to do is find the group where they're not toddlers going to Gymboree anymore," Co-Owner Bill Hogan said. "But they're still too young for organized sports. Still, they need their exercise and we work on things like coordination, balance, stamina and get them running around."

There's about 2,000 square feet of activity space inside the facility, with basketball nets, soccer balls and fitness and sports equipment of all kinds.

"We have a little bit of everything," Hogan said. "We're not going to specialize here. This is not a soccer program or a basketball program; it's a fitness program and these are just some tools to keep them moving, keep them having fun."

The hope is to teach these children the importance of physical activity.

"We read a lot about the smaller children in the area and all over the place and they're just not getting the kind of exercise that they should and that's causing health and weight problems," Hogan said.

Each 45-minute session is supervised by staff members who've had experience working with children.

"I've worked with kids in the past and I like being around them," Staff Member Tyler Brookens said. "I've never seen a place like this; so structured and so good for the kids, it's awesome."

The Winter session starts on Tuesday. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Northern Nevada Children's Cancer Foundation.
