RENO, NV - A popular Nevada brewery announced Friday that it will be shutting down operations at the end of February.
Buckbean Brewing Company in Reno opened with much fanfare in April of 2008 with its lineup of can and keg beer, that quickly became a staple in stores, bars and restaurants.
According to a release from the company, Buckbean’s
unique beers like the Orange Blossom Ale, the Tule Duck Red Ale and the Black Noddy won many national beer awards from the world’s most prestigious beer festivals, including medals at the World Beer Cup, the Great American Beer Festival, the West Coast Beer Fest and the Australian International Beer Awards. But owner Doug Booth said that the sluggish economy and a higher-than-projected cost of doing business eventually forced the brewery to close.
“We locked into our lease at the peak of the economy, and when we opened it was the worst-case scenario for malts and hops — all the prices skyrocketed,” said Booth. “In the end we were understaffed and under funded.”
Booth added that Buckbean is announcing its closing date now so that they can thank their customers and give their loyal fans a chance to drop by the brewery and have their final Buckbean brew, or grab a case of discounted beer.
“I want to thank the community and the people who supported us. We appreciated everyone who bought our beer and we would like to see all of our loyal customers come by the brewery so that we can say goodbye to them.”
Buckbean is selling all of its brewing equipment to other brewers,
and there is a possibility that another brewer will open up in the space
they are vacating in the future.
Buckbean is also running deep discounts in their final weeks of operation as they sell the last of their beer inventory. Customers are welcome to stop by the brewery and buy discounted cases, four-packs, growler refills or kegs of Buckbean beer.
Buckbean Brewing is located at 1155 S. Rock Blvd., Suite 490. Tasting room hours are: Tuesday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday – Friday from 3 p.m. to 8p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
