Nevada's Big Give Aims to Reward Charities

RENO -- Numerous charities are hoping for a successful day of online fundraising. Friday is Nevada's Big Give -- a day-long push for charitable organizations to collect donations. The charities with the most donors and most money raised receive additional money from Nevada's Big Give.

"We are a non-profit, no-kill shelter so that means we don't receive any funding from any government agencies so we are completely funded through donations," Michelle Perez of the Nevada Humane Society said.

The Assistance League of Reno-Sparks is also collecting donations. Volunteers stood outside the organization's Vassar Street thrift store, trying to attract attention with a sign. Inside the store, computers were set up for people to make contributions.

"We clothe almost three-thousand students in the fall time period with the donations that come in for 'Operation School Bell,'" Janis Bernardo, a volunteer with the Assistance League said. She said people can specifically donate to the clothing program and to a senior food program. She added people can make a general contribution as well.

The online push continues through 11:59 p.m. Friday night. To make a donation to many different charities, go to Hot Topics.
