CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - Nevada lawmakers are considering a law to let next-of-kin control the social media legacy of loved ones who die.
Republican state Sen. Barbara Cegavske (sig-AHV'-skee) tells the Las Vegas Review-Journal there's no state law allowing descendants access to social media accounts like Facebook or email.
Legislators were told Monday that SB 131 would let the executor of a will or a dead person's personal representative take control and create an online memorial or shut down websites, blogs and email accounts.
Otherwise, proponents say photos, recordings and other information could remain online forever.
Proponents say a person could also designate the disposition of his or her online profile in their will.
A 1986 federal law forbids electronics communities companies from releasing information without the owner's consent and a government order.
