RENO, Nev. -- People in and around Reno have seen a lot of huge airplanes in the skies this weekend... and that will likely continue through next week.
A Nevada Air Guard official tells KOLO 8 News Now the 152nd Airlift Wing is participating in the Mountain Flag exercise. It began Saturday, April 20th and will continue through Friday the 26th.
The exercise involves multiple launches of the C-130 Hercules. The C-130s are military transport planes known for their unusually large size.
During the current exercise, several C-130s will take off, land, and fly together. Overall, the 152nd Airlift Wing plans several dozen “sorties” throughout the week.
The purpose of launching, flying, and landing together is to provide training for surge operations. The training is rare, however. This is the first time since 2008 the 152nd Airlift Wing has launched six C-130s at once.
