CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - A coalition of advocacy groups is releasing an alternative State of the State message, challenging Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval's stance to balance the budget without raising taxes or fees.
Instead, the Nevada Values Coalition calls for higher taxes on the mining industry, a luxury services tax and a net profits tax on businesses that have annual profits exceeding $500,000.
Sandoval said with Nevada's unemployment rate the highest in the
nation, raising taxes would hurt businesses and job creation. He
has proposed 5 percent salary cuts for all state workers and has
warned of other deep cuts and "shared sacrifice."
The coalition counters that cuts alone will put a disproportionate burden on those less fortunate.
