Reno, NV - It's out with the old and in with the new. By the end of the year, NV Energy's new smart digital meters will be on just about every building in Northern Nevada. That's why NV Energy hosted an event in Reno on Friday - to teach people about the meters.

"It is making everybody have more information about their energy use," says Michael Yackira, President and CEO of NV Energy.

The new digital meters collect data on energy usage 96 times a day. That information is transmitted back to NV Energy and the customer can also access that information a day later online.

"So this will provide the opportunity to get that information to our customers on as frequent a basis as they want so they can take action. So at the end of the month, they know what their bill is and they can reduce it," says Yackira.

"Our customers are saying when it gets into the peak season, whether it's in the winter time or summer time, we're afraid to open our bills," says Gary Smith, customer energy solutions director at NV Energy. "And if we can help them with understanding their energy..."

While the smart meters are new to folks in Northern Nevada, they've already been installed in most of Southern Nevada. NV Energy hopes to have all of the state using the smart meters by the end of the year.

The meters have been controversial. Some people are concerned the radio frequencies involved could affect their health. That's why the state's Public Utilities Commission held a public workshop in Las Vegas last month, which was shown live in Carson City. About 50 people showed up in Carson City for that.

The CEO of NV Energy says people should not be concerned about their health.

"We have data that suggest that the health effect is nothing," says Yackira. "It's much more of a question if you carry around a cell phone in your pocket than the kind of emissions that these meters have."

While some customers are still skeptical, no one is allowed to opt out. However, NV Energy says concerned customers can put their names on a Postponement List. They just have to contact the company.

NV Energy crews will start installing the smart meters in homes in Spanish Springs starting on January 17. The company says it alerts people about 30 days prior when it plans to come out and make the swap.

This is a way for the power company to generate additional revenue. THEY are not going to pay for this out if their profits. They will make ALL OF US pay either a monthly fee for the meter, an increase in the rates, or both. Knowing NV energy, they will charge both. I DON'T want these meters in, or anywhere near my home! They are a massive invasion of privacy. Once they start collecting the data, I guarantee it will be available on the internet for ANYONE to search and find. My meter reader also said these new meters would be able to turn off appliances such as air conditioners, swamp coolers, washers/dryers, etc during peak hours and newer appliances will have a chip installed that can be accessed by the meter. I REFUSE to have a "Smart Meter" attached to my home and I also REFUSE to pay the additional fees involved! I'll install solar panels and cut the power feeder line to my house if I have to. Just say NO to smart meters!

It is not that smart meters are bad in and of themselves, the problem is that Sierra pathetic aka NV Energy IS GOING TO abuse the use of them to charge people MORE money as the ONLY reason for having them. If nothing else, the company MUST NOT be allowed to charge the customer IN ANY WAY for the meter! The company MUST BE REQUIRED to absorb the cost of the meters and the cost of installing them out of their company profits AND MUST NOT be allowed to pass any of those costs on to ANY CUSTOMERS.

What? I am being forced to add a type 2B carcinogen to my home environment? Even if allowed to opt out, we are then subjected to pay extra so NV Energy can make even more profit after firing 100s of employees at our expense. Thousands of complaints have made made over this issue in California alone, both with respect to severe health issues and at least 20% increase in electric bills! As citizens we need to band together and fight this kind of injustice by attending the Public Utility Commission Meeting on January 18. For more information contact the Public Utility Commission regarding smart meter implementation opt-out process options Docket #11-10007 Hearing for opt-out is on Jan 18, 2012 at 9am Location 1150 E. Williams St. Carson City NV Hearing room “A”. Please pass the word. Don't let NV Energy get away with this.
