Mudslide Covers Northwest Neighborhood

RENO, NV - Moose Ridge Dr. in northwest Reno is one area still cleaning up, after being hit hardest Monday afternoon. Residents in the area say they had no idea what was coming.

The storm started with some hail, then rain and then the flood.

"It was like a little river going over the basketball hoop and then all of a sudden the entire street was full of mud and rocks," said Sara Davis, a neighbor.

The heavy downpour turned Moose Ridge Dr. into to a rapid river, bringing down everything in its path. It wasn't exactly the homecoming Phillip Schultz expected.

"As you come up to the neighborhood, it was a little bit muddy," he said. "I was trying to dodge it and as I was getting closer to my house, more rocks, more mud-slipping and sliding in two-wheel drive."

He shoveled mud off his lawn for two hours and says there wasn't any damage to his home, but his lawn will need a lot of work. In the three years he's lived there, he says he's never seen anything quite like this.

"There was a lot of boulders the size of bowling balls lying on the streets."

With the heavy downpour and the canyon right next to the neighborhood, there was nowhere left for the water to go but downhill.

Crews from the city works department cleaned up the street for hours, but say there's still a lot more work to be done in the next few days.

"We're going to verify that the storm drains and the sewer haven't been compromised with silt and debris in them and then move onto the clean-up project," Marnell Heinz from the City of Reno's Public Works Department said.

The worst is over, but Heinz says this probably won't be the last time there'll be flooding in the canyons.
