RENO, NV - For the last couple of weeks we’ve referred to the dangers of swimming or rafting in the Truckee River. High, swift, and cold waters can prove dangerous for anyone who gets in the water. But the spring runoff isn’t just affecting the Truckee. Mountain streams are tearing up their banks as well.

Thomas Creek is running faster and higher than most people can remember.

Crossing streams without getting wet is a little trickier these days, just ask Debra Markoff and her dog Tanner.

“Not If it gets too fast, yea, the other day he stopped right here actually refused to go across the creek, he did good today though,” says Markoff.

Newly created streams cut through the trail as they head down from the Mt. Rose Wilderness area. Ed Wishart and his friends were coming down from a morning hike. Even though this is his first trip up here, he says you can tell the creek is higher than normal.

“Well the water is spilling over the trail in some spots, as it normally would do obviously,” says Wishart.

It doesn't matter if you are on foot or riding your trail bike, water is making its way over small bridges along the trail-its slick, and you could get wet.

On the positive side, the water and the falls and pools its created are beautiful

The worst of the spring runoff is over up here, but the streams are still running, high cold and fast, if you want to hike up here, especially with kids or dogs you need to be careful parts may be deeper than usual and the current can take you down stream.
