RENO -- Reno welcomed 2014 with a huge crowd cheering under the famous arch, and fireworks overhead. While most celebrations were peaceful, there were roughly two dozen arrests in Reno. According to RPD, arrests included: five for resisting or obstructing and two for DUI. The Sparks Police Department said it arrested one for DUI, and several for warrant-related issues. SPD said it made 32 traffic stops and had increased patrols on the streets.
The Nevada Highway Patrol said it arrested five for DUI, down from seven during celebrations a year ago. NHP also said there were five crashes.
NHP said New Year's being on a Wednesday, and more awareness of increased enforcement, may have led to a decline in DUIs.
Thanks to a grant, the NHP will continue its stepped up enforcement through January 6th.
