A man is dead after his car was struck by a Union Pacific cargo train Tuesday afternoon in Lovelock.
According to Pershing County Undersheriff Tom Bjerke, the vehicle was hit while at a marked railroad crossing at Limerick Canyon Road. The call went out at 3:46pm Tuesday. This rural railroad crossing does not have a crossing arm.
The man was the only occupant in the car. He died at the scene. It does appear to be an accident. Bjerke says the Sheriff's Office will await toxicology reports to see if the driver was intoxicated.
The Union Pacific crew was shaken up. Union Pacific exchanged the crew at the next stop, and continued the cargo train westbound to its destination.
