FERNLEY, NV - A man is dead after being struck by a train in the Fernley area.
An official with Union Pacific Western Region says the accident happened shortly after 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 28, 2014, just north of Mesa Road and West Pilot Road in Fernley.
He says a Union Pacific freight train was traveling westbound when it hit an adult male walking on the tracks.
The official says the man was walking with his back to the train. He adds that the man was not near any crossing.
Sergeant Grundy with the Lyon County Sheriff's Office says the train sounded its horn and attempted to stop, however the man never moved and did not respond to the sound of the horn.
The age of the man is currently unknown.
The official with Union Pacific Western Region says no one on the train crew was physically injured, however, the crew on board was replaced.
An investigation is underway.
