SPARKS, NV - Sparks police have arrested a man accused of numerous crimes involving a 12-year-old girl he met through social media.
Police say that Matthew Burr, 44, had been speaking to the girl through social media, particularly through an app known as "Whisper." Burr allegedly offered the child money to "hang out."
Burr is accused of convincing the girl to sneak out of her home in the middle of the night and accompany him while he made his deliveries to several local businesses. Police say this happened at least twice, and during one incident, Burr paid her for sex. Burr allegedly took photos of the victim while engaged in the sexual acts.
As police investigated the case, SPD detectives posed as the victim and continued communication with Burr. Police say that it was clear that Burr knew the girl was underage and that Burr had sexual intentions.
When Burr arranged to meet with the girl again, he was instead greeted by detectives. Burr had apparently purchased several gifts believing it was the victim's birthday. One of the gifts was sexual in nature.
SPD detectives completed a forensic examination of Burr's cell phone, and found nude images of the girl. Detectives also located other images not belonging to the victim.
Burr has been charged with Sexual Assault, Kidnapping, Child Luring, and Using a Minor in Production of Pornography.
Police say the investigation is ongoing, and police are making an effort to locate any other potential victims. SPD detectives have been working with Utah investigators and the FBI.
