Man Who Hit And Killed Metzker Surrenders for Plea Deal, Is Released

RENO, NV - The man who hit and killed Channel 2 sportscaster J.K. Metzker is out of jail after being accidentally booked for a probation violation that didn't happen.

The Washoe County booking report from Wednesday night indicates he was booked Wednesday for DUI and probation violation, then quickly released. KOLO 8 News Now has since spoken with jail officials and the prosecutor in the Metzker case, and they say Rhea was at the jail as part of a scheduled appearance for his plea deal after being sentenced in the Metzker case. But as he was being booked for that appearance, a computer read it as a new DUI arrest, and he was jailed overnight for a probation violation. There was actually no new arrest Wednesday.

Rhea had been sentenced to five years of probation and community service after hitting Metzker in November of 2011, and leaving the scene. That service included working with Metzker's family in some capacity. The judge decided not to sentence Rhea to prison because of letters he received from Metzker's family and supporters.
