RENO,Nev.--It appears mail thefts are more widespread than originally thought. Officials say thieves were found with mail from all across the city, but one place was hit particularly hard.
The Montebello complex on Summit Ridge Drive was hit, and it was it the hardest. Officials say 85% of the mail recovered belonged to Montebello residents.
"Generally when there is a theft like a break in of a mail box, our mail carrier will notice and report to his supervisor of a postal customer. In this case we were not notified of any kind of mail theft," said Steve Hofheins, a U.S. Postal Inspector.
The Postal Service is planning to press charges against the two suspects, Sarah Powers and Kenneth Hall. Its likely Federal charges will be pressed by the U.S. Attorney's Office.
The maximum sentence for the crime is 5 years in prison.
